Sharing Circles
The power of small groups
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how small groups are nurturing my creativity and my spirit. I lead three monthly small groups (one each on creativity, spiritual practices and theme-based). I also participate in a poetry critique group several times a month. And a monthly book group (though at 12-20 participants it’s larger than what is typically considered a small group). I’ve found that 5-8 people is kind of the sweet spot, allowing enough space for deep sharing and listening and enough people to have a variety of perspectives. Having a defined, shared intention has also been important to me. In other words, there’s a focus to the gathering.

What I love about my small groups, which are each a little different and have their own unique personalities, is that I can be open and vulnerable, sharing in ways that aren’t encouraged or even accepted in a lot of other spaces. My spirit flourishes in this kind of environment. During Covid, I rediscovered just how much of an introvert I truly am and that I dislike crowds. Big, busy and noisy venues with lots of people drain me. Small talk leaves me wanting. I’m committed to minimizing my exposure to crowds and large groups, and to fostering the more intimate interactions that deepen my connection with others and with myself.
I hope you’ll take a little time to think about the groups that you belong to that are inspiring you or the kinds of groups you’d like to belong to. Is there a particular group that is enriching or would enrich your writing life right now?
Yours in spirit,
Sandra
P.S. Do you have a small group you love? Is there a small group you’re longing for? I hope you’ll take a minute and tell me about it.
